The 10 largest European Kitchen Companies

The Nobia Group                            Häcker                                   Mobalpa, France

Many of you have asked me for a ‘top 10 list’ of European kitchen companies. Being that in my mind ‘Top 10’ is not just about company size and/or sales volume (especially in today’s economy…) I’m still working on that list for you and sooner or later it will be posted.
In the mean time, with the help of a good friend (thank you, A.S.), I was able to come up with the list of the largest companies in the European kitchen brands for you.

Bauformat, Germany                      Nobilia, Germany                          Cuisine Schmidt
The difficult part about coming up with such a list is how do you measure size, or I should say – by what parameters. I see, some European companies are actually part of a Group – they own several kitchen brands/factories, not necessarily all in the same country (!). Some manufacture kitchens but also sell retail, through a chain of factory owned stored. They may produce less kitchens, then another company, but if you add their retail sales, to their wholesale figures and then add appliances (manufactured by appliance companies, counters and even labor, the comparison is simply not easy.

Nolte, Germany       Alno Group, Germany         Schüller, Germany           Snaidero Group, Italy

So with the above in mind, the only way to create the list (without going nuts) is really just by total sales figures (Europeans like to use the term – ‘Turnover’). So here is the list:

1. Nobia Group (Sweden) – There are many companies in this group, like Poggenpohl and Pronorm (Germany), HTH (Denmark), Marbodal (Sweden), Sigdal (Norway), EWE (Austria), plus, they also have a retail-network in the group – Magnet (UK).
2. Nobilia (Germany) – one company.
3. Alno GroupAlno, Wellmann, Pino and Impuls (Germany).
4. Cuisine Schmidt (France) – including a retail-network.
5. Häcker (Germany) – one company.
6. Nolte (Germany) – one company.
7. Mobalpa (France) – including a retail-network.
8. Schüller (Germany) – one company.
9. Bauformat Group Bauformat and Burger (Germany).
10. Snaidero Group Snaidero (Italy), Rational (Germany and including retail-networks like Ixina and Cuisine-Plus.

Some intresting facts:

  •  The majority of the companies, in the above list, are from Germany and the Scandinavian countries.  In that part of Europe, the groups (or concerns) are very typical and have been around since before Columbus discovered America… (no joke!).
  • The only Italian company is in the tenth spot – unlike the northern Europeans, in the southern part of Europe, the opposite is more common – smaller companies, privately owned and operated. Even inside Italy, the more south you go, the smaller and more family owned and operated the companies are. With that said, there are a lot more Italian kitchen companies operating and selling kitchens, then there are German and Scandinavian combined…
  • If we only consider single factory sales, without retail sales and/or other companies in the Group, the largest one is Nobilia, from Germany, then  Häcker, Nolte and Schüller, from Germany.
  • This list is not guaranteed, as many companies do not publish their sales figures but is fairly close to reality. Also, the list can change in one day, if one of the groups decides to sell off a factory or two, or in return, to acquire a couple of brands.

    BEST EU KITCHENS!!

Just a suggestion to add to your list the company below; SHEER VALUE FOR MONEY

My name is Athina Markantoni and as I said on the phone I work for one of the biggest Italian furniture factories COLOMBINI Group (200,000 m2 of production) (http://www.colombinigroup.com/ ).

COLOMBINI Group with more than 5,000 sales points worldwide offers top quality, Italian design products at the best possible price. The quality, variety (6 different lines, including bedrooms, children’s rooms, dining rooms, sofas, fitted kitchens and wardrobes) design and price of COLOMBINI makes it an unprecedented partner, leading to success.
    ————————————————————————————————
Athina – thanks for your suggestion. Being that I’m trying to stick to facts and to be as a accurate and as informative as possible, I must reply to your comment – the list is of the 10 largest kitchen producers in Europe – Colombini (Artec) is not one of them and is really more of a large furniture company, that happens to also produce kitchens. In addition, I will not refer to Colombini as a “top quality” product – it is a company driven by price point and the quality is not exactly one of its strengths…

    Dear,

I really appreciated the job you done in this site which you have consolidated the all the kitchen companies data who are really a incrediable productivity in terms of kitchens espacially Europeans, THANKS.

i have went through few of these companies web and their product pictures really i liked it.

Basically i am from Middleast -Saudi Arabia, one of furniture manufacturer of classic sofas, and since i have been through this modern new kitchen concept and got very much interested seriously to start to make it in our factory. but i have went through many webs i didn’t find the any training material or videos to learn how to make modern kitchen like eropean style. could any one help me in this regard please. and will be really appreciate.

    Dear Naqheel,
    Thanks for the compliments.
Regarding the ‘training material or videos to learn how to make modern kitchen like European style’ – unless you are looking for information, to start building cabinets as a hobby, I must say that this is an unusual question – manufacturing cabinetry, at the level and quality of these companies is not a hobby but rather a very serious business. Some of these brands have a very long tradition and history, dating back 50 and as much as 100 years! Their suppliers of parts (doors, hardware, etc.) are also established companies and they too have many years of experience.
There are ‘do it yourself’ types of instructional web sites out there, such as Wood Shop Demos and ‘do it yourself’ books (see Amazon‘s selection) but I truly doubt that this will allow you to build European cabinetry like these brands.
    I hope this was helpfull.
    All the best.

I just started doing fitted kitchen business in my home country and my clientelle is growing.

    Hi Dorothy,
    You’re very welcome.
In several countries, in Europe, they offer actual design schools – some in Germany, Italy and I’m sure that other countries offer them too.
    Good luck!

You forgot about SieMatic from Germany! The best European kitchen furniture and the more expensive one!

And by the way Nobilia is German too. See the history of the company!

    Ada

    Dear Ada,
This post is about the 10 Largest Companies… if SieMatic is the best (or even one of the Best 10) is debateable, but they are not one of the largest 10 companies in Europe for sure!
Not sue about the Nobilia comment… – ?

  11. ken

Can you compare the standard design and quality of nobilia, hacker and leicht??

  12. ken

Hello, i tend to buy fitted kitchen for my new house in asia, and i am considering Leicht, Hacker and nobilia, can you give a general comparison in terms of quality, price and design for above mentioned 3 brands??
    —————————————————-
    Hi Ken,
in my humble opinion, in terms of quality – Hacker is on top, Leicht is secoond and Nobilia is third. I’m not sure of the pricing structure in your country and so value will be hard for me to rank.
    Good luck,
    kitchenguy

  13. ken

thanks for your opinion, i have another concern that Hacker’s price is cheaper compare to Leicht, is that tne same internationally?? with your comments, does that mean Hacker has better quality/price ratio???

  14. Ania

    Hi,
I am in the process of choosing kitchens for my house and am interested in your opinion and information on nobilia vs. snaidero. Which one would you recommend in terms of quality? Are they manufactured where the companies say they are (i.e. Nobilia in Germany and Snaidero in Italy)?

    1. kitchenguy

      Hi Ania,
Hands down – Snaidero. Not that Nobilia is a bad company, but it is a ‘price driven’ product and Snaidero is a much better kitchen.
      Good luck,
      kitchenguy

      1. Ania

Thanks very much! As for the second questions, is Snaidero manufactured in Italy?

      2. Edwin Enrique

        Hi

I’m starting a kitchen business and in negotiation with leicht kitchens, what’s your opinion regarding leicht vs other German company like poggenpohl or bulthaip.

I’m looking for other Italian brands like ernestomeda or doimo cucine, what’s your opinion on those 2 lines. Any other Italian lines suggestions.

        1. kitchenguy

Edwin – I’m not sure where in the world you are, but if you have a choice of these 3 German brands, the answer is simple – wouldn’t you like selling the bigger brands, the ones the actually deliver traffic to your showroom door…? Bulthaup is better quality than both others and a better and much more exclusive brand than Leicht. Poggenpohl is a little less quality than Bultahup and much bigger brand than Leicht – you do the math…
Regrading the Italian brands – Ernestomeda, is Scavolini’s higher end line – nice product, but lacks identity, unique-factor and in most of the world lacks branding. Doimo is a fairly new kitchen company and is a part of a much larger furniture group – usually not an advantage.
If I knew where you are opening your showroom, I can make some recommendations.
          Good luck!
          kitchenguy

  15. Dave

    Hey Kitchenguy,

I liked the article and just had a question for you…how does Cucine Lube compare to the companies that are listed and also what is your opinion of the Lube quality compared to some of the others like Snaidero? I appreciate your comments!

    1. kitchenguy

      Hi Dave,
Cucine Lube is not in the same league – it is a ‘price driven’ product, when the focus is on low price and so the quality, design and innovation are lower as well.
Watch for my next post, to be posted soon, about this subject.
      Thanks,
      kitchenguy

  16. Amir Taheri

    Hi Kitchenguy

whitch brand is best in the world about quality?

    1. kitchenguy

      Dear Amir,
There really is not one brand that is “the best in the world” – if you look at my Top 20 list – these are the best brands in the world.
      kitchenguy

  17. Amir Taheri

    Hi kitchenguy,
Who are the top designers of kitchen cabinets in the world?

    1. kitchenguy

      Dear Amir,
Your questions are getting harder and harder… 🙂
This is like asking “who is the best painter in the world?”, or “who is the best chef in the world?”, etc. When it comes to personal taste, it is very individual and unlike sports, there’s no world rankings in these fields.
Notwithstanding; I can tell you who is the best European Kitchen Design blogger in the world… 🙂
      kitchenguy

      1. Amir Taheri

        Hi,

        I also agree kitchenguy.

  18. Izidor

    Hi,
Nobody talks about the kitchen prices … Is it normal to spend 20.000, 30.000 EUR and even more for a bunch of boards ??

    1. kitchenguy

Izidor – do you feel the same way about spending 20.000, 30.000 EUR on a car? After all it is just some metal and plastic…
These “boards” are (in the case of the top brands) high quality, marine grade , post consumption panels, that together with high-end hardware, are all designed, assembled and finished to perfection, to create a ‘masterpiece work of art’ called high-end European kitchen. kitchenguy

      1. Izidor

Well, I don’t spent money on “super” cars either (it’s also a waste of money), but comparing high-tech electronics and machinery in the car with bunch of boards, is really something totally different. Everybody can process boards, and they are really not gold, in order to cost such amount of money. It’s just crazy.

  19. Izidor

I see the philosophy of the manufactures. There are two ways: one way is let’s produce bad quality pieces for lower price. The second one is: let’s produce a little bit better pieces but based on ‘art’ or let’s say ‘masterpiece work of art’ in order to sell this for 3x or 4x the real price of the bunch of boards. But what is really needed is better quality pieces (boards) without so-called masterpiece work of art. I don’t cook or eat on ‘work of art’. I usually look it. Obviously the furniture industry designers wants to earn lots of money on people who want to cook and eat. Besides, also high-tec cars have nice design and style, but they don’t cost 3x or 4x times more, unless they are made of pure gold.

    Hey Kitchenguy,

I am currently planning to buy handless kitchen in white matt lacquer. I hesitate between Bauformat and Hacker kitchen.
Which one would you recommend to me?
I will be grateful for your help,

    1. kitchenguy

      Hi Jad
If the price is similar – go with Häcker.
      Good luck,
      kitchenguy

      1. jad

Thank you very much for the advice 🙂

  21. john white

you haven’t mentioned COMMODORE KITCHENS who are a significant manufacturer for the contract market – any reason?

    1. kitchenguy

      Hi John,
The reason I have not listed them in my directory is that my criteria for listed brands is that they must have dealers, selling their products in and outside of the country they are based in. otherwise, the list will be endless, as I would need to list every shop that makes cabinets. Commodore only sells directly to the contract market and has no dealers.
      Thanks,
      kitchenguy

  22. Linda

I was looking to purchase a Rational Kitchen but have not been too impressed by the quality of their doors. I am now considering Alno or Bauformat as an alternative, which do you consider to be the best quality of these three companies?

  23. Linda

Can you offer more information on each of these companies please?

    1. kitchenguy

      Linda,
This is a tall order and I wasn’t planning on doing so – anything specific you’re looking for?
      kitchenguy

  24. Linda

Are these companies top, medium or low range german manufacturers of quality kitchens?

    1. kitchenguy

Linda – these are the 10 largest European kitchen companies – they made this list because of their turnover (sales volume). They are not all German, a few are actually a group (several brands) and some are higher quality then others.
      kitchenguy

  25. Linda

I have had a Keller kitchen for the past 18 years, which now looks dated, are these companies of the same quality?

    Hi Kitchenguy,

we’re currently trying to decide between an RWK Kitchen & a Hacker kitchen.WeI would value your comments,

    Thks,

    D

  29. We are a leading manufacturer of Carcass Plinth Support Legs and other plastic furniture components.
As we are supplying some of the major Kitchen manufacturing companies could we be added into your ‘European Hardware Companies’ section ?

    1. kitchenguy

      Hi Anthony,
Do you have a ‘live’ web site, where one can see your products…?
      Thanks,
      kitchenguy

  30. Villneuve

    Hi Kitchenguy,
I would be interested to know how would you rate the quality of Pronorm in relation to Hacker & Bauformat?

    1. kitchenguy

Villneuve – much lower than Häcker and more or less at the Bau-for-mat.
      Good luck!
      kitchenguy

  31. Bud

we have been looking for kitchen for our own refurbished house.have seen qite a few kitchens and narrowed down to Leicht v bauformat similar price but now have been advised Beckerman is jast as good quality but slightly cheaper. Will we be compromising on quality?
Also the above is all white lacquered is acrylic much inferior quality as we have seen German ones aswell but pricey
    Many Thanks Bud

    1. kitchenguy

Bud – if Beckerman is slightly less expensive – go for it!
      Good luck,
      kitchenguy

      1. Bud

        Thanks for replying
but is there any product difference in quality between the three
        many thanks
        bud

        1. kitchenguy

Bud – Leicht and Bekerman are both a bit better than Bauformat.
          kitchenguy

  32. Bud

    Hi Kitchenguy
got to choose a kitchen soon
have you heard of RWK kitchens NOT RMK (ready made kirchens)
They claim to be superior German kitchen makers
    and trade through Wilson Fink
They have an acrylic quality door which we like and feel is good quality and looks very good
however the competion claim it is inferior yto high gloss lacquer
However RWK claim their kichens are far better than say leicht wellman or baulformat
Also RWK high gloss lacquer is far more expensive
    Help
    Bud

    1. kitchenguy

Bud – all these brands are about the same level and they all offer several grades of quality (and pricing), as well as various door finishes, each at a different price point. You must compare apples to apples, if you want a true comparison. Pick the door finish you like best and than compare the cabinet specs. Last, but not least, compare the re-sellers – they are as important as the product itself…
      Good luck,
      kitchenguy

  33. Shashikiran Dayalan

    Hi,
From Bangalore , India. I have to now decide between between Lube and Spagnol…both Italian kithcen companies. Both products almost similar. Your comments.
    Shashikiran

    1. kitchenguy

Shashikiran – they are both ‘price driven’ and you are right that they are similar – I would focus on the local dealer and designer, which are just as importent as the product.
      Good luck!
      kitchenguy

  34. Nabeelah

Please advise us on Siematic kitchens
    are They superior quality?

      1. Nabeelah

Siematic claim to be on par or better than poggenpohl
and far more superior than say alno hacker etc
        is this claim viable?

        1. kitchenguy

Nabeelah – that is almost all correct. SieMatic is a better product than Poggenpohl and far better than Alno. I do feel however, that Häcker is somewhere between SieMatic and Poggenpohl and not ath the Alno level.
          Good luck,
          kitchenguy

  35. Jean-Marie

    Hello from Switzerland !
Firstly, I like your site, well done !
I am working on a MBA management report about the kitchen industry in Europe and in Switzerland. I am trying to find some information about the industry and the market size. Do you know where I could find detailed information about the industry, the size of the market, the customer trends, the key figures, etc.
I found a report published by CSIL Milano called “The European market for kitchen furniture” but it costs Euro 2900.00.
Any chance to help me to gather information ?
    Thanks a lot !
    Cheers,
    Jean-Marie

    1. kitchenguy

Jean-Marie – glad you like the site.
Unfortunately, there is no other place I’m aware of, that has all this information collected… I’m assuming that is why they charge the big bucks…
In some countries (like Germany), the information is more available and is considered ‘public knowledge’, but you need to know where to get it from – someone in the industry who’s willing to share the reports they have.
      Good luck,
      kitchenguy

  36. bud

    Hi Kitchenguy
    you have helped us previously
we have narrowed down to bauformayt and hacker
hackker is £2000 more expensive with less draws and less stone worktops also some is high gloss lacquered and some are laminate but is impressive and the retailer is very good
As for bauformat all is high gloss lacquer and design also impressive
the retailer is a smaller less time trading but design also good
what we would like to know is if we went for bauformat are we compromising on end product like quality of run of draws ie the blums hinges etc and quality overall
the hakker one is not the champagne but one down
also if anything went wrong with bauformat and the retailer closed would bauformat still look after us
    many thanks

    1. kitchenguy

      Hi Bud and welcome back!
I’d still go with Häcker, for the following two reasons – 1) It is a better made product and there’s a good justification for spending the extra £2000.
      2) If the retailer is smaller and newer, it could be the reason he’s charging you less – perhaps he is not doing as well as the other one…?
If the retailer closed shop and as long as there’s another one in the area, you should be able to get service from Bauformat or even directly from the factory, but have you considered going back to the Häcker dealer, showing him the quote from Bauformat and asking him to match it…?
      Good luck,
      kitchenguy

  37. Nani

    Hi Kitchenguy,
great site, thanks for all the info!
I’d be very happy to get your opinion on Invita Kitchens which are part of the Nobia group. What would you compare it to in terms of quality? Compared with wider known brands, I mean.
    Many thanks.

    1. kitchenguy

Nani – being that it is a small factory that is available in a limited number of smaller markets, I’m not very familiar with it… From checking out their web site and the technical specs, it looks like most of Nobia’s other products.
      Good luck,
      kitchenguy

      1. Nani

        Thanks for the reply.

  38. Anita Mistry

Hi kitchenguy, At last i have found a website that compares other kitchen manufacturers..
I am having a complete overhaul done to my house and the kitchen is one of the main parts of that.. I have been lookin at Nobilia’s websites and others that sell their range and quite like them, but from your suggestion above to others, is it right that they are not as good as Schuller and Hacker? I know that they are price driven, so does this mean the quality is then not as good?

    1. kitchenguy

Hi Anite – you are correct. In 9 out of 10 times ‘price driven = lower quality’
      Good luck,
      kitchenguy

      1. Anita

Thanx for the reply.. final question… in your opinion, who would you recommend thats not soooo high in price but holds the quality… and easy to get in the UK?

        1. kitchenguy

Anita – there are MANY brands that fit this criteria and I’m not sure what type of style, material, finish, etc. you’re going for… Is Schuller and Hacker too high…?
          kitchenguy

          1. Anita

hi gloss, handless kitchens with integrated appliances is waht i am looking for … seems like schuller and hacker are in for the running… thanks kitchenguy!.

          2. kitchenguy

You’re very welcome and good luck!
            kitchenguy

  39. geert

What’s your opinion on Kvik kitchens? They are either Danish or Swedish..but I could not find out in which agglomerate they would fit.

    Thanks

    1. kitchenguy

Geert – Kvik (Danish for Quick) is actually a chain of approx 120 stores, in Denmark, Faroe Islands, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Holland, Belgium, Spain and now Thailand. They are part of the Swedish group AB Ballingslöv Int. Being that they are selling under their own label, I’ve decided to list them as a brand. They are low to mid quality and are focused on price.
      Good luck,
      kitchenguy

  40. Elena

Hi kitchenguy, we are buying a kitchen for our new house, we are considering to choose between Schiffini, Elmar or Santos, which one would you recommend us? Kvik is really lower quality compared to these 3? Thanks.

    1. kitchenguy

Elena – Schiffini is my choice, out of all 4.
      Good luck,
      kitchenguy

  41. Elena

If for price reasons we decide not to go for Schiffini, wich will be your choice between Santos,Kvik and Elmar? What do you think about Xey?

What Italian companies would you rank as the top 10 as far as hi end products….for a North American hi end dealer

    1. kitchenguy

Hi Earl – this is my Top 10 Italian brands, for a high-end dealer in North America (in alphabetical order): Arclinea, Binova, Boffi, Dada, Pedini, Schiffini, Snaidero, Toncelli, Varenna and Valcucine. That is as far as quality product. Next, you need to evaluate other things like branding and dealer support in North America. If the product is great, but no one has heard of it and there’s no support for the dealer, then it’s an up-hill battle selling it… There’s also the issue of ‘protected territory’, as some brands sell through factory showrooms, against their dealers. Also, at today’s market conditions, you better check their quality-to-price ratio (customers are very frugal these days) and their adaptability to the North American market, such as depth of product line (to compete with the local products that are very custom), standard Am. sizes, ability to custom size, color, etc.
If you don’t mind, I’ll contact you directly to discuss.
      Thanks,

Hi – great site and very informative. Well done!

I am considering kitchens from RWK, Bauformat and Rotpunkt. Can you tell me your opinion and how they rank? I know Bauformat is very high on sales support and design, but what is your opinion on quality? Thanks

    1. kitchenguy

Raphi – Thanks for the kind words.
All 3 are ‘price focused products’. They are about equal, as far as everything else – check out your local supplier/dealer/designer – they are as important as the company,.
      Good luck!

what is Alno like compared to Leicht and Hacker? which one would u choose?

    1. kitchenguy

Anita – Alno is a lower quality product (and lower priced) than Leicht and Häcker.
      Good luck!

        Hi KitchenGuy

We are extending our house in England. We are looking for a mid range kitchen below the likes of Poggenpohl but still looking for quality and a style similar to their Quartz lava style. We would prefer to spend more on appliances. Any suggesttions? Thanks Adrian

        1. kitchenguy

Adrian – not sure I can recommend anything that fits your description… Let me know if you find something like that.
          Thanks,

            Hi KitchenGuy,

We are renovating our house in london and are looking to buy a new german kitchen, a handleless range. We are undecided between schuller and hacker. Just wanted to know which is better quality to buy?
should I go for gloss or matt satin lacquer or matt textured lacquer. Please advice us.
            Kind regards
            Saima

I have designed a line of space solutions (furniture) and am putting the pieces together to take my products to the market. My modular solutions are more similar in manufacturing to kitchens then furniture. I am looking for a kitchen manufacturing partner to produce my products. You know the lay of the land for kitchen manufacturing, price, and quality.

I would love to talk with you more about what I am doing and get your take.

Where are you based? Will you be attending the Salone Internazionale del Mobile? If so I would love to meet up. If not do you have a more direct email where I could reach you.

    Thanks,

    Nathan

    Hi,
I am a dealer in Westchester NY.
    It’s a pretty affluent area.
I am in the process of redesigning my showroom.
I am a dealer for KraftMaid and Hanssem America.
I am also a contractor for Allmilmo and Scavolini, but do not have their kitchens in my showroom, just their door samples.
I would like to include a mid-end and a high-end compnay in my new showroom. Could you give some advice? Maybe Siematic? I want to include companies that are very well known, so I don’t have to spend a lot on advertising.
    Thank,

    Zen

      Hi Zen,
Good move, as far as getting a brand, but you also want to make sure that you have some kind of protected territory – SieMatic have already a dealer in your area…
I would also suggest to chose a brand that has a good product selection and depth, so you can appeal to more customers and not just a narrow base.
      Good luck,

Saima – my personal preference would be Häcker, but both are great products. They both offer different levels (models) and so it is not easy to compare w/o this info. Also, please make sure to include the local dealer in your decision making – quality of design, installation and service is as important as the product itself!
          Good luck!
