Pedini - Integra

Pedini - integra in grey oak.

This blog was created in order to put together as much information as possible about European kitchen design, European kitchen companies and the different kitchen brands that have been manufacturing custom kitchens and built in kitchens, in Europe for more then a century.

European kitchen designers are the first ones to introduce what we know today as the ‘built in kitchen’ – kitchens that are no longer ‘free-standing’ pieces of furniture (as they were 100 years ago) but kitchens that are designed to have the cabinetry fitting between two walls.

Companies like Snaidero, Boffi, Pedini, Dada, Varenna and Val Cucine, from Italy, Poggenpohl, SieMatic, Allmilmo and Bulthaup , from Germany and Smallbone and Clive Christian, from England are the pioneers, the innovators and the companies that set the tone in Europe – the same tone that then becomes the new look for kitchen design around the world.

It’s about time! A blog that really deals with European products and not just these ‘euro-style’ kitchens.
    Keep it up!

Very comprehensive guide… but no mention of Johnny Grey?

    ———————————————————-

Johnny Grey is a very talented designer, who started in Europe, with Smallbone kitchens, but today most of his business is done in the US. His style, though very unique, can’t be categorized as European per say – this blog is all about European design.
Well, you got me thinking though… – maybe I can find a fit for good old Johnny somehow.
    Thanks,

I forgot to mention that Rational has been rated as no 2 of all German Kitchen manufacturers in 2008, according to surveys by the Trade Service Markt Intern.
Please feel free to contact me.
    —————————————————————
    Hi again,
When several regular visitors of this blog asked for a ‘Top 10’ European kitchen brands list, Markt Intern was the first thing that came to my mind. Unfortunately, they only rank German companies and more importantly, I really am not ‘buying’ their rankings…
In my opinion, Markt Intern is not a true ranking – their lists are completely detached from reality and it always looks to me to be more of “miss congeniality” list that is based on sympathy for smaller companies. From what I know (and I’ve known about them and reviewed their lists since the mid 80’s) they view themselves as the supporter of the small kitchen companies in Germany.
I find it hard to take their list seriously, considering that in the past 15 years, 5 of the top companies on their list went bankrupt…
I view Markt Intern as the German kitchen industry ‘Robin Hood’ list – offering support to the small companies.

I am intrigued about Norman Foster/Foster+Associates designing a kitchen for Format-Kuechen GMBH. Has anyone heard of this partnership? I do not see much written about Format in this blog – and I am trying to figure out how they made such a coup. Any background, or experience with Format would be appreciated.

    Thank you David!
I’m glad you love the site.
I’m trying to keep the directory to manufacturers only (vs. small shops) so the criterias are having distribution (multi locations) or dealers selling your product. From looking at your site, it seems that you are a local shop – am I correct? And if so, at least you got a good link to your site 🙂

  19. kevin Rafter

    hello kitchenman
have you any comments on the upcoming philip starck kitchen from miele, any inside information, what can we expect?

    thanks
    ————————————————————————————————-
    Hi Kevin,
Here is the inside information you were looking for, according to my sources – ‘Miele Küchen’, as you probably already know (being that you’re a dealer) is not a ‘daughter company’ of ‘Miele appliances’ for the past 3 years. Their legal name is ‘Warendorfer Küchen’ and they are permitted to use the name ‘Miele Küchen’, only until the end of next year.
During the housefair, in September, they will announce their new ‘product name’.
Because of the above, they have teamed up with Philip Stack, to at least have some brand associated with the product. Otherwise, they will become the most expensive ‘no name’ kitchen in the world…
I hope this was helpful to you.

    Hi kitchenman.
just back from the launch of the philippe starck kitchen by miele(warendorf). did not quite know what to expect but while not reinventing the wheel his designs are quite attractive & will appeal to women whereas the recent porsche & sc1 are probably more tecky engineered(& expensive)for men. well he is french! self promoting & well capable of selling his ideas.question is can they sell in this new price concious market?

  31. Faucet Expert

Having been born in Europe, I am a big fan of European design. The U.S. is always behind when it comes to cutting edge and modern design. Many of our faucet manufacturers here are just starting to get the idea. For instance Hansgrohe a sister company now of Delta and Brizo is starting to put some of its European influence into Delta Faucets and Brizo Faucets. Here you for sure have to live in metropolitan areas like New York, Miami, LA or Chicago to be able to get away with a kitchen like these shown. At least without getting weird comments from people. We would love to see these trends come across the pond and catch on more.

Having been in australia. I like the design of European kitchen. Its really awesome to look at the design.

  33. Joe

I have always been a huge fan of European kitchens and their designs. You’ve done a great job in compiling this list. There are two wonderful Canadian companies you may want to mention. They have many european designs and top quality (with a comparable sticker shock to match). These are Neff and Downsview Kitchens.
If you were given the opportunity to open a brand new showroom, and you wanted to include a European Kitchen brand, along with bathrooms and other furniture (all european contemporary styles), would you go with one brand (like Berloni or Scavolini that offer all of these options), or would you pick and choose?
Also, it’s been almost a year since you promised to take a stab at the “Kitchen Ranking”…any progress there?

Thanks and keep up the great work,

    Joe
    ————————————————————————————————-
    Dear Joe,

Thank you for all the kind words and for following this blog.

Regarding the 2 Canadian companies – outside of their traditional designs, their modern looks are very ‘clunky’ looking… they are not as sleek as the European brands. Their prices are also not European like – they are a lot more expensive!

If I was given the opportunity to open a showroom (and I had), I would go with a great European kitchen company, that offers a brand name, quality products, great customer service and support at a good value. If they do not offer vanities and/or other furniture, than get it from someone else, but I would not select the company based on that.

That ‘Top 10 Kitchen Brands’ is still in the works… 🙂

  34. Philip Scott

As an independent dealer of modern contemporary kitchens, two Italian and one domestic, we find the most important aspect for good business is the service and support the manufacturer provides to us. Product quality is probably second and brand name recognition is down the list.

  35. Kevin Henry

    KitchenGuy,

Great blog. I am sorry that I am only finding it now. You observations are right on the money. I have been involved with the European Kitchen market in the US for nearly 20+ years…Starting with SieMatic in the late seventies through the eighties and then heading up the relauch and repositioning of Snaidero in the US as a luxury brand…from there I was brought in to launch the Varenna kitchen for Poliform. Up until two years ago I was CEO of ALNO USA. Today I am co-founder of Bazzeo (www.bazzeo.com). A high-contemporary kitchen collection, manufactured using recycled and sustainable materials and produced in the USA. I think we are the first US kitchen company built to an internatonal styling. Today, market lines are beginning to blur and te distiction of beng European is no longer an exclusive selling feature. The UK design magazine just award Bazzeo the Gold Medal for Design…the first time an American company has ever entered as well as placed.

Again…fantastic blog and I am proud to post your link on my blog at http://www.theessentialkitchen.blogspot.com

    Dear Kevin,
Thank you for all the kind words and thank you for posting a link on your blog.
It is a real shame, to see what some of your ex-employers are going through in the last few years – SieMatic’s, Kuppersbusch’s and Poliform’s downfall in the US and the recent news that Alno USA is shutting down.
Good luck with your new venture!

    Hi,
I am contacting you to see if you would be interested in being one of the first websites to get to invite your readers to a new online gallery and a competition for Electrolux Kitchen Stars.

To celebrate our 90th anniversary, we have decided to celebrate our customers and make turn them into stars. At http://www.electrolux.com/kitchenstars, 89 Electrolux customers from all over the world are now showing us their kitchens – all of them with a very special story to share, a Kitchen Moment.

Now, we want to give your readers at The Kitchen Designer the opportunity to enjoy the new gallery and take part in a contest before it is officially announced.

The brief for the competition invites anyone with a special kitchen story to take part. By uploading a photograph and a personal “Kitchen Moment”, contestants will compete to become the official 90th Kitchen Star and get the chance to win the iconic Ergorapido vacuum cleaner.

All contributions will be uploaded in a separate gallery on the website and the winner will be announced in early 2010.

Feel free to contact me with any questions. I am looking forward to staying in touch with you!

    Best regards,
    Adrian

    VERY GOOD,THANK YOU

  38. Kevin Henry

    Kitchen Guy,
There is a lesson to be learned in the current state of the companies that I have founded and then left when they felt they could take it on their own. Few companies put faith in the leadership in sales and marketing. The product is much a good story…but like any good story…you need a story teller. many come to the well, but few ask where the water comes from.

  39. Eleanor Hoh (WokStar)

Wow, this is a great site featuring all the European kitchens.

I am honored my Wok Star cooking classes are hosted by many top leading European kitchens mentioned on your site: Bulthaup, Pedini, Snaidero, Varenna. I choose these kitchens because a beautiful environment is very important to inspire learning and shows off how a kitchen functions. I like European modular designs most and many architects and designers who’ve come to my classes and are Wok Stars really enjoy learning a new style of cooking while meeting potential clients in a social setting. If you’re ever in Miami, I hope you’ll join me as my guest so you can experience first hand what I’m talking about.

  43. MS

Hi, can you please tell me if this italian kitchen company Astra has a good quality products and can be trusted?

    thanks!
    MS
    ————————————————————————————————–
    Hi MS,
“Good quality’ is a very relative term – Astra is a ‘price driven’ product, which means that they are not a high quality product, but more of a lower end products, for a good price – one may look at Astra and see ‘a good value product’, another may think of it as ‘a cheap product’ – it all depends on what your needs are and what you budget is.
As far is trust is concern – are you a dealer or an end user?
    Ciao,
    kitchenguy

  44. Andrew

    Hey Kitchenguy,

I live in the U.S. and am building a new home. I recently visited the Boffi gallery in SoHo and was blown away. I don’t have the budget for a kitchen and bath from Boffi which has got me into looking at other suppliers that are similar. Which brands would you recommend I look at? I am looking for value but not cheap as you note in a previous post. Also, have you made any headway on the Top 10 list you mention above?

Thank you for the expert help,
    Andrew
    ———————————————————————————————
    Hi Andrew,

Boffi is a wonderful kitchen, unfortunately, it is overpriced…

There are several brands represented in the Soho area (Bulthaup, Valcucine and others), but I feel that your best bet, to maximize value, is Pedini – they are 1-1/2 blocks south of the Boffi showroom (on Lispenard Street) – they can acheive the same look, the same (if not better) quality, at a lesser price.

I’m still re-thinking the Top 10 list – if i do it, it must be fair and I am yet to arrive at the right formula of how to calculate it.

    thanks,

    kitchenguy

  46. moshe

hi, i have a custom mill shop in Brooklyn, we do our own finishing in house with the exception of the my poly finishes which are done by Caviliry. i have been able to make a product which is custom made, similar quality to Boffi (in my opinion of course) and at a much better price point.
how would you suggest i connect with customers who are looking for the custom detailing, the high quality work and a good price point such as the last inquiry?
    ————————————————————————————————–
    Dear Moshe,
Connecting with these customers is a very expensive process, which is why Boffi is more expensive then you… If Boffi did hire world-known designers to design their products, did not advertise in top magazines, did not operate expensive showrooms with top designers working in them and did not print expensive catalogs, they will have similar to yours, at the same price (or lower) than you…
In addition to the above, many customers want to have a brand name – they feel a lot more comfortable that way – they know there’s a big company behind their product.
    Good luck,
    kitchenguy
