Gernot Bohmann (left) was born in 1968 in Krieglach/Styria, Harald Gründl (middle) in 1967 in Vienna and Martin Bergmann (right) in 1963 in Lienz/East Tyrol. After their graduation from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, they founded EOOS in 1995. EOOS operates in the fields of furniture and product design as well as shop design for clients such as Giorgio Armani, Adidas, Alessi, Bene, Bulthaup, Dedon, Duravit, Keilhauer, MatteoGrassi, Walter Knoll and Zumtobel. EOOS Basic Research examines rituals, myths and intuitive images within the scope of Poetical Analysis®.

So far, the books “The Death of Fashion” and “The Cooked Kitchen. A Poetical Analysis” have been published by Springer Wien NewYork. For EOOS, design is a poetical discipline and a cultural service for society.

"The Death of Fashion" and "The Cooked Kitchen

To date, EOOS has been awarded more than 50 international honors, among them the renowned Italian design prize Compasso d’Oro for Kube, which was produced by MatteoGrassi. In 2008, the editors of all 24 worldwide Elle Decor magazines deemed the design of b2 mobile kitchen system, produced by Bulthaup, the best of the year in the category Kitchen.

“Out with design!” read Gerd Bulthaup’s request in 2005 when he asked EOOS to think about a mobile kitchen system. An unusual dictate, which Martin, Gernot and Harald only too gladly obeyed. After three years of research and conception, a kitchen design based on the principle of a workshop was developed consisting of the following elements: a kitchen work cabinet for utensils (”tools”), supplies and dishes; a modular, readily adaptable kitchen workbench with a sink and a stove, as well as an appliance-housing cabinet accommodating the oven, dishwasher and refrigerator. Drawers - in which chaos usually reigns anyway - are entirely eliminated.

Alberto Colonello - Innovative Designs for Italian Kitchen and Furniture

Born in Milan, in 1976, Alberto Colonello is a designer who is associated to an experimental concept of design being the product of technological innovation. After graduating in interior design and completing his Masters, Colonello began his career in 1998 and started gaining recognition in various international competitions such as Cevisama, Young & design and Intérieur.

Alberto Colonello - Italian kitchen designer

Italian kitchen furniture companies started paying attention to the up and coming designer and then, in 2002 he designed the Single kitchen for Boffi (one of the leading Italian kitchen cabinets manufacturers with kitchen showrooms around the world) and in 2005 this mono-black kitchen had been awarded as Best Kitchen for small spaces in Wallpaper magazine and included in the ADI Design Index 2005. These designs and design awards made him a powerhouse in the arena of designing Italian contemporary kitchens.

Colonello did not focus solely on modern kitchens - in 2006, he designed the modern coat hook Ambrogio for Moco, a division of Minottiitalia Trading and was invited to exhibit his work at the Idee Show at East & Studios in Milan. In the same year Colonello was selected, at the Milan Triennale, as a young designer with promise to take the part in The New Italian Design exhibition.

In 2007 Colonello’s Single kitchen for Boffi was shown at the Avverati exhibition during the Milan Furniture Fair (the mother show for Eurocucina - the world’s largest show for contemporary and modern Italian kitchens, as well as some traditional kitchens from all the Italian and other European kitchen cabinet manufacturers) and his most recent projects include an art gallery in Milan ad some residences in Como and Milan.

In 2008, Colonello has designed the On/Off kitchen Block for Boffi and once again established why his innovative design ideas earned him the position as one of the leading Italian kitchen designers today.

It is in this spirit that we have conceived the kitchen; not as a traditional and static kitchen, but as an object which presents itself as something new

designer’s own words:
The domestic rituals of the home are today different from the past. Nowadays we often dine away from home, quickly, in the brief respites of our hectic days. However, the real value of preparing a meal, of “breaking bread” at home, is not lost to us – it becomes a moment of conviviality & fun. It is in this spirit that we have conceived the kitchen; not as a traditional and static kitchen, but as an object which presents itself as something new, a sculpture on the wall, a block without a reference to its proper function. An object that moves away from the static and becomes alive and dynamic; an object that opens up from a closed position to become functional & efficient, capable of making the ritual of preparing a meal collaborative & fun.

The traditional concept of the kitchen is taken apart and re-construed

The traditional concept of the kitchen is taken apart and re-construed

The design is composed of a base as a block suspended 40 cm, containing all the fixed elements (i.e. stovetop, wash basin, dishwasher, drawers, etc.). The cabinets are cantilevered elements which can be moved up or down, attached to vertical guides. As such, this kitchen “block” can be opened up; it becomes an object lending itself to active participation and transformation in a newly rediscovered domestic ritual. Insofar as the cabinets have the same depth of the fixed base, unlike traditional kitchens where they are narrower, these cabinets can be raised further up so as to avoid hitting one’s head while preparing & cooking food. The smaller block contains the remaining elements of a functioning kitchen – refrigerator-freezer, stove, and more drawers. This element too can be closed by a moveable panel when not in use, thus hiding the various appliances, and transforming itself into a clean, solid block. In line with this same spirit of novel design, and to maintain clean lines throughout, we wanted to avoid any obvious protruding handles on these blocks. As such, we’ve conceived a new “handle” – a single handle to move all panels & cabinets and to open all drawers: an industrial suction-cup, normally used to move & install sheets of glass. It is attached & unattached with ease and facility with the use of a single hand. The “suction-cup-cum-handle” thus becomes the only colorful element in this otherwise black block.

the cabinets and panels made in corian can be variously moved & repositioned, continuously transformed in a fixed space.

the cabinets and panels made in corian can be variously moved & repositioned, continuously transformed in a fixed space.

It is an economical solution, and, at the same time, the only irreverent element in the composition, thus lightening up this designed kitchen. The traditional concept of the kitchen is thus taken apart and re-construed. It becomes a sculptural object, without handles, in which the cabinets and panels made in corian can be variously moved & repositioned, continuously transformed in a fixed space.
