European Kitchen Design, Made in The USA
Though this blog is all about European Kitchen Design, I had to make this one exception and included a post about an American design competition, with an all American winning line-up. It is just that when you look at their winning designs that are so European in their look and feel that it made perfect sense to include them in this blog.
Augusta, GA – Electrolux ICON® and Interior Design® congratulate the winners of the 2008 $100,000 Kitchen Design Competition.
This year, Electrolux challenged members of the architect & design community to present innovative, thoughtful concepts for a kitchen that meets the changing needs of today’s modern family.
Entries were judged by a panel of esteemed judges including Cindy Allen, editor-in-chief of Interior Design magazine; Calvin Tsao, founding partner of Tsao & McKown in New York City; Laura Bohn, founder of Laura Bohn Design Associates in New York City; Jackie Naylor, founder of Jackie Naylor Interiors in Atlanta; and Henrik Otto, senior vice president of Global Design at Electrolux.
Grand Prize Winner - Marcello Zuffo Ft. Lauderdale, FL
A kitchen with movable components
The grand prize winner, Marcello Zuffo, designed a kitchen with movable components that continuously adapt to the changing needs of the modern family. “We were impressed with Marcello’s entry because of the innovative way he interpreted the challenge of meeting the needs of the modern family,” said Otto. Zuffo received a $50,000 cash prize plus a suite of Electrolux ICON® appliances valued at $25,000. His winning kitchen rendering will be featured in the March 2009 issue of Interior Design magazine.
Second Prize Winners - Kim Letven and Nada Bibi, WE design Brooklyn, NY
Kitchen design with seamless melding of indoor and outdoor space
Second place went to Kim Letven and Nada Bibi, of WE Design in Brooklyn, NY. Letven and Bibi won a suite of Electrolux ICON appliances valued at $25,000 for their design. The jury appreciated these designers’ seamless melding of indoor and outdoor space. One wall is made of sliding glass doors to allow easy access to the appliances and social space.
Third Prize Winner - Gisue Hariri, Hariri & Hariri Architecture New York, NY
Modern aesthetic kitchen
Third prize winner, Gisue Hariri, won $10,000 in Electrolux ICON appliances for her design. Hariri’s entry stood out for its modern aesthetic and efficient use of space, ideal for the multi-tasking family.
